London Footsteps

London has a wealth of ceremonies and traditions some well known like Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace and the Lord Mayor's Show in November, others less publicised and maybe missing from the tourist itinerary.  Who, for example, is familiar with the Knolly's Rose Ceremony or  Cart-Marking in Guildhall.

This year, Cart-Marking is on Wednesday, 12th July and is organised by The Worshipful Company of Carmen, a Livery Company with a history stretching back centuries.  Once the Carmen were responsible for the control and licensing of wheeled transport in the City and that tradition is revived at the annual event in the Guidlhall Yard.

So why not go along and see all shapes and sizes of wheeled vehicles - from hand-pushed barrows and horse-drawn coaches to modern London buses and police cars - following one after the other into the Yard to be 'ceremonially licensed' by the Lord and Mayor and greeted by the members of the Carmen's Company.

The event takes place for two hours in the morning and entry is free.  This is reminder that many of the trades, crafts and regulations of past centuries may have past into history but are not forgotten.
