BLOOD SWEPT LANDS and SEAS OF RED

Carpet of poppies at the Tower of London

The carpet of red poppies at the Tower of London is a fitting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War. The inspiration comes from a poem found in Chesterfield Library and written by an unknown soldier who died in the trenches,

How ironic that it comes at a time when so much of the world is gripped by horror and violence. Each day the volunteers gather to assemble and plant more and more of the porcelain poppies until eventually their will be 888,246 forming a red necklace round the Tower walls.
